So what do you do when you've got a sunburn. When your skin is red and painful after a day in the sun, it is a little too late to talk about applying spf. What you need is something to soothe in burn and heal your skin.

The safer way is to slather on pure aloe vera gel. I'd count on the aloe vera gel I'd buy from the store, that is more than 99% pure aloe vera gel and colorless.
The other solution is to use pure lavender essential oil. Not spike lavender, mind you, but lavender angustifolia pure essential oil.

UVB rays from the sun damage the skin surface, giving you that red sunburn.
Bergamot is a photosensitizer. Do not use bergamot if you are going out in the sun. Bergamot makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight and more likely to sunburn.
Bring along a tube of aloe vera gel in case someone gets sunburned. Slather aloe vera gel on sunburn to soothe the burn and speed up healing.
The SPF or sun protection factor of the product indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun with the product before getting a sunburn compared to staying in the sun without any protection.
Chamomile oil soothes a sunburn and can be used in a lukewarm bath. 5 or 6 drops of chamomile water in the bath is enough.
