tragacanth gum is an effective emulsifier. It stabilizes lotions. I like to add a little powdered tragacanth gum to a herbal infusion, add a small amount of a plant oil like sweet almond oil and a drop or 2 of essential oil to form a body lotion.

Care must be taken when using essential oils. Essential oils must be diluted before use. 1 drop of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil like sweet almond oil for massage. 3 to 5 drops of essential oil to a bathtub full of water for a aromatic bath

I once made a golden lip balm by simply infusing sweet almond oil with calendula petals for the golden yellow color and healing properties. I used that as the oil base in an ointment recipe. The resulting ointment was a golden yellow lip balm.
